Where do people work if they move to St. Johns County?
Many residents commute north into Jacksonville for hospitals, finance, logistics, and professional jobs, or work remotely and treat JAX as the airport rather than the office. St. Augustine and the beach towns have tourism, hospitality, education, and local services; they are not a substitute for a large-city job market. If your work is place-specific, map the drive at 7:30 a.m. before you pick a village.

St. Johns County is a residential coast attached to a larger labor market. That sentence disappoints people who hoped St. Augustine was secretly a tech hub, and it reassures people who already have a Jacksonville badge or a remote laptop.
Jacksonville — Southside, Downtown, the Town Center / Deerwood pattern, the port and logistics belt, banks, insurance, and hospitals — is the weekday gravity for a lot of households. Northwest St. Johns (Julington Creek, Fruit Cove, and nearby) is often the shortest St. Johns version of that commute. Nocatee and the CR 210 / 9B corridor are the growth version: workable on a good day, educational on a bad one. Historic St. Augustine is a longer northbound story. Drive it at the hour you would drive it, including the return at 5:30.
Healthcare is a genuine local industry, not only a quality-of-life amenity. Mayo Clinic’s Jacksonville campus sits in Duval County and draws patients and staff from across the First Coast; Baptist, UF Health, and other systems fill out the map. Flagler Health+ in St. Augustine is the in-county hospital name people use first. If you are a clinician, verify campus and parking before you optimize for a beach zip code.
Military families already know the First Coast cluster: NAS Jacksonville, Naval Station Mayport, and other installations north of the county line. St. Johns is a common housing choice for people who want the school district and are willing to drive. Gate traffic and a hurricane plan belong in the same conversation as the listing. We will not pretend to be a base housing office. We will say: measure the gate-to-garage time on a weekday, not a Saturday.
Inside the county the jobs look like a growing suburb plus a tourism city: schools, construction, county and city government, restaurants, hotels, golf, and retail. Those paychecks are real. They are not, on average, a substitute for the professional wage you might be leaving in a larger metro. Reddit threads are blunt about this, and they are not wrong as a caution. If your household needs two local professional salaries that match a Northeast or Bay Area number, run that search before you ship the furniture.
Remote work changes the math. JAX becomes the airport. The village pool becomes the office amenity. Fiber is not identical on every street — test the address. If you only need to be in Atlanta or D.C. twice a month, this county can feel generous. If you need to be in downtown Jacksonville five days a week from a south-county cottage, it can feel long.
