How bad is traffic in St. Johns County?
Growth along I-95, County Road 210, State Road 9B, and the Nocatee corridor is visible in how long it takes to cross town at 7:30 a.m. It is not Miami, and it is not the empty two-lane you might remember from a 1990s vacation. Drive the roads you would actually use at the hour you would use them, including school pickup if that is your life.

Ask this on a local forum and you will get two answers in the same thread: “It’s not real traffic” and “The infrastructure did not keep up.” Both are describing the same county at different hours.
The bones are familiar: I-95 as the north–south spine, State Road 9B feeding the north county toward Jacksonville, County Road 210 as the east–west complaint, State Road 16 toward the World Golf Village interchange, State Road 312 as a St. Augustine workhorse, and A1A when the island is in season. Nocatee Parkway is a lifestyle road and a peak-hour lesson. None of this is a downtown grid you can abandon for a subway.
School start times amplify everything. A village that feels empty at 10 a.m. can stall at 7:20. If you have elementary pickup and a Jacksonville badge, you are stacking two peaks. Tourist weekends add a third personality around the historic district, the beaches, and holiday lights season. A Saturday in March is not a Wednesday in August, and neither is a Friday when I-95 has a wreck.
Construction is not a phase with an end date so much as a condition of a fast-growing county. New villages open; road projects try to catch them. Locals talk about interchanges that will help “when they are done.” Believe the current travel time more than the rendering.
Compared with South Florida, many arrivals still feel relief. Compared with a memory of St. Augustine in 1998, they feel crowded. Set the baseline to the present. If you need a 25-minute door-to-desk guarantee, live closer to the job or work hours that miss the peak. If you can be flexible, the county is livable — people do it every day — but it is a car county, and the car has opinions in the morning.
Our advice is boring and it works: drive the loop on the visit. CR 210 at 7:30. A1A on a sunny Saturday. U.S. 1 when a storm sits over the bridge. Then choose a house. Send a note if you want to compare two routes you are already considering.
